Drought-Tolerant Landscaping in Coronado

Drought-Tolerant Landscaping

California-native and Mediterranean palettes that look intentional, not desperate. Lower water bills without the gravel-yard look.

The first wave of San Diego drought-tolerant yards was rough. Sheets of decomposed granite, three lonely agaves, a flag-pole succulent in the middle. They aged badly and they made the trade look bad.

We do drought-tolerant differently. The principle is the same — design for ten inches of rain — but the result is layered, full, and seasonally interesting. Most of our drought-tolerant clients tell us their yard looks more alive after the conversion than it did before.

Plant palette we draw from

California natives

Manzanita, ceanothus, sages, buckwheat, toyon. They evolved here. They want to be here.

Mediterranean

Lavender, rosemary, olive, Westringia, Pittosporum tenuifolium. Same climate as ours; built-in drought tolerance.

Succulents & agaves

Used as accent and structure, not as the whole yard. A few well-placed agaves do more than thirty.

Ornamental grasses

Muhlenbergia, Festuca, Stipa. Movement, softness, almost zero water once established.

Water savings

Most of our drought conversions cut water use by 60–80% within the first year. After year two, when plants are fully established, many of our clients run irrigation only April through October.

Common Questions

Drought-Tolerant Landscaping — FAQ

Will it look dead in summer?

No. We design for late-summer interest specifically — silvery foliage, blooming sages, structural agaves. The yard peaks in different ways across seasons.

Do we still need irrigation?

Yes, for year one and two. After establishment, drip irrigation is supplemental. We always design with a system in place.

Can we keep some lawn?

Often, yes — a small lawn where the kids actually play, drought-tolerant everywhere else. That's a common Coronado layout.
