Landscaping in Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach sits close enough to the water that the wind writes the plant list.

We have spent a decade working the coastal side of San Diego, mostly Coronado and Point Loma, and OB shares the same two problems. Salt sits on the leaves. And the irrigation hardware pits out from the outside in.

What sandy soil near the beach changes about planting

Water moves through it fast. A bed that would hold moisture in a Kensington yard drains before the roots get much, so we amend and mulch heavier here and set drip rather than spray on the beds.

Spray heads lose half the water to wind on an exposed OB lot. Drip does not.

The plant palette leans drought-tolerant for the same reason it does in Coronado, and not only for water rates. Plants that tolerate wind and salt simply live longer here, and a yard that survives its third summer is cheaper than one replanted twice.

Irrigation on an Ocean Beach lot

We use brass and stainless heads with pressure-rated PVC. The plated hardware sold as a bargain fails within a season this close to the water, and we stopped putting it in years ago.

On a job we did above Sunset Cliffs, the yard had washed out because water had nowhere to go and the system feeding it had corroded out at the fittings. We rebuilt the drainage before we touched a plant. That order matters more than most people expect.

If a patio or walkway is going in, the irrigation gets reset first. Trenching finished hardscape is the redo nobody wants to pay for.

The lots that climb toward Point Loma

North and east of the OB flats the ground starts to pitch. Those lots behave like our Point Loma slope jobs: drainage and retaining wall planning come before the beds get drawn, because runoff decides where soil stays.

We terrace planting on the steeper ones so roots hold the grade. Then the palette goes on top of a grade that will not move.

How a job starts

Sam walks the lot. He reads the sun and the wind exposure, checks what the existing irrigation is actually doing, and hand-draws the plan before anyone quotes a number.

Then he plants it. And comes back to prune it.

Most of our work in these neighborhoods comes from someone who watched us tend a yard down the street for a few seasons. We are a small Coronado team and we keep it that way on purpose.
