What does a paver driveway cost in Coronado?

A brick or concrete paver driveway in Coronado typically runs about $18 to $32 per square foot installed, driven by demo, base depth, and edge restraint. Walkways run lower because the base is thinner and no vehicle load is involved. Access and mature tree roots explain most of the price spread we see.

A driveway and a walkway are not the same build. People price them like they are.

The visible surface might be identical. What sits under it is not. A driveway carrying a vehicle needs roughly 8 to 12 inches of compacted base on our soil. A walkway is fine on 4 to 6 inches. That difference is most of the cost gap, and it is entirely invisible once the last paver drops in.

On the older blocks off B Ave and C Ave, clay brick usually reads right with the house. On newer builds a large-format concrete paver often looks less fussy.

Neither one fails because of the paver. They fail because of the base and the edge.

Why paver driveways and walkways go bad here

Three things account for nearly every failed install we get called to fix.

  • Under-compacted base. The pavers settle into wheel ruts within a couple of years and the pattern goes wavy.
  • Missing or cheap edge restraint. Without it the outer courses migrate outward and the joints open up.
  • Irrigation left under the finished surface. Salt air pits plated fittings, a line fails, and now the repair means pulling up the patio you just paid for.

We reset irrigation before pavers go down. Brass and stainless heads, pressure-rated PVC, sleeves under anything hard. Doing it in that order costs a fraction of doing it in the wrong one.

Tree roots and tight access

Coronado's mature street trees have roots that do not care about your driveway. On lots where a root runs through the drive apron, we either bridge it with a deeper sand-set section or design the layout around it rather than cutting a root that is holding a 60-year-old tree upright.

Access drives labor. On the tight side yards off J Ave and C Ave, base rock and pavers move by wheelbarrow because nothing wider fits. That adds days, and days are the largest single input in a hardscape number.

Permeable options and the water angle

Permeable concrete pavers set on open-graded base let rain move through instead of sheeting to the street. On a flat Coronado lot that mostly helps with puddling at the apron. On a Point Loma slope it matters a great deal more, because water leaving a hard surface fast is what erodes the grade below it.

Sequence we use on a driveway job

Demo and haul out the old surface. Excavate to base depth. Sleeve and reset any irrigation crossing the area. Lay and compact base in lifts. Screed the bedding layer. Set pavers, cut edges, install edge restraint. Sweep joint sand and compact. On a standard residential driveway that is a multi-day build, longer if demo is thick concrete.
