How do you choose a landscape designer in Point Loma?
Pick a Point Loma landscape designer who walks the lot before drawing anything, plans drainage and retaining walls before plants, and holds an active CSLB license with bonding and insurance. Ask who will be on site during installation, and ask to see finished yards on slopes similar to yours.
Most of the yards we get called about in Point Loma have the same story. Someone drew a pretty planting plan from photos, and the first February storm moved the soil.
Why does the slope matter more than the plant list?
Below Sunset Cliffs the grade decides everything. Water has to go somewhere, and a plan that ignores that will fail no matter what is planted.
When we walk a slope lot we look at where runoff enters, where it exits, and whether the existing walls are holding or leaning. A wall over 3 feet usually needs its own engineering conversation, and any wall over 4 feet measured from the bottom of the footing to the top generally needs a permit.
So the first question for any designer is simple. Who is handling drainage and walls, and when does that get decided?
What should a designer check on your lot?
- Where roof and hardscape runoff currently goes
- Retaining wall condition, weep holes and backfill
- Afternoon sun and ocean wind exposure, which can run 15 to 20 mph on breezy days
- Irrigation parts exposed to salt air
- HOA or board plant palette and hedge-height rules
What separates a designer who draws from one who builds?
| Question | Drawing only | Design and install by one team |
|---|---|---|
| Who visits the lot? | Often a drafter or none | The owner, before any drawing |
| Who sets drainage? | Left to the contractor | Settled in the plan |
| Who fixes a plant that fails? | Unclear | The same crew that planted it |
| Who prunes after year one? | Not included | Same hands return |
That last row matters on the coast. Plants on a Point Loma slope need a first-year check, because a drip line that looked fine in June can be clogged by October.
How much should you expect to pay?
Design fees and build costs vary with slope, wall count and access. A lot with a long carry from the street costs more labor than one with a driveway beside the beds. Ask for scope in writing, with drainage and walls listed as separate lines, so you can compare bids honestly.
We would rather give you a straight range after seeing the lot than a number over the phone.
What credentials should you ask to see?
Ask for the CSLB license number and look it up on the state site. Ours is CSLB #1152146, and we are bonded and insured. Ask for a certificate of insurance too. Anyone legitimate sends one the same day.
Samuel Fortes walks every property himself, draws the plan, plants it and comes back to prune. You can read more about how that works on our landscape design page, or see the Point Loma specifics on our Point Loma page. For the drainage side, our post on why drainage comes before plants on Point Loma slopes goes deeper.
If we worked on your yard in Point Loma, mention the service and your neighborhood in your Google review. It helps the neighbors still deciding.
