Do you need a landscape architect above Sunset Cliffs?
Most Sunset Cliffs residential yards need a licensed contractor and designer, not a landscape architect. An architect's stamp matters when an engineered wall or public work drives the job. We are CSLB #1152146, bonded and insured, and we say so before you pay anything when a wall needs engineering.

The lots below Sunset Cliffs run downhill, and that is what sends people searching for an architect. They see a slope and assume a stamped plan.
Usually the slope is a drainage and wall problem, and a contractor who solves those first can draw the planting around them.
Landscape architect vs contractor and designer: what each covers
| Job on the lot | Landscape architect | Licensed contractor and designer |
|---|---|---|
| Beds, planting plan, salt-rated irrigation | Can draw it | Draws it and builds it |
| Drain lines and drain rock behind a wall | Can specify | Pitches and installs |
| Retaining wall under roughly 4 feet retained | Not required | Builds it |
| Retaining wall past roughly 4 feet or with an engineered footing | Stamp or engineer needed | Builds to the engineered plan |
What we set before any plant goes in
Drain lines get a pitch of a quarter inch per foot of fall. Drain rock sits over four-inch perforated pipe behind the wall.
Irrigation goes in brass and stainless heads on pressure-rated PVC. Plated hardware pits out within a season this close to the water.
We learned the order the hard way. A bed planted above an unsolved drainage problem washes out in the first real winter storm, and we have rebuilt yards that did exactly that.
When we tell you to bring in an engineer
Once retained height passes roughly four feet, or a footing needs engineering, the job is a different scope. We say so up front, because finding out mid-build is the expensive way.
On a front and back with beds, a patio, irrigation, and hedging, the stamp adds cost and adds nothing to the planting. Samuel Fortes walks the property, draws the plan by hand, plants it, and returns to prune.
