What does shrub and tree work look like in Coronado?
Shrub and tree work in Coronado means choosing plants that handle salt air and full afternoon sun, then shaping them to fit the block. Samuel Fortes walks the lot, plants, and returns to prune. Older lots on B, C, and J Avenues bring tight side yards and mature trees.
Hedges define a Coronado street. Plant them wrong and you see it for years.
What do we do on the job?
We start by walking the property. We look at what has already survived on the block, where the afternoon sun hits, and where salt wind comes off the bay.
Pittosporum holds up to a January storm on the bayside. Some agaves that look fine two streets in will rot on the ocean side, and we have pulled enough of them to stop planting them there.
On a recent job off Orange Avenue, we replaced a tired 40-foot privet run with 15-gallon pittosporum set 30 inches apart. By the second summer it had closed into a solid 6-foot screen.
Planting and replacing
We plant new hedges, replace tired ones, and add specimen shrubs and trees where the lot can carry them. On older lots in Coronado and Point Loma we work around mature tree roots and side yards as narrow as 36 inches instead of fighting them. We dig planting holes at least twice the width of the root ball and mulch 3 inches deep to hold moisture through the dry months.
Shaping and pruning
Shaping is part of the job, not an afterthought. See our pruning service for the return visits that keep a hedge in form. We usually return every 8 to 10 weeks in the growing season.
What changes the price?
- How many plants, and how mature they are when they go in. A 5-gallon shrub and a 24-inch box tree are very different jobs.
- Access to the yard, especially on tight side yards where everything gets carried by hand.
- Removal of existing plants or stumps.
- Irrigation changes needed to keep the new planting alive.
Most hedge replacements we do in Coronado land between $1,500 and $6,000, depending on length and plant size. We give a firm range after the site walk. A number before that would be a guess.
Do Coronado HOAs and design review matter here?
Yes. Many Coronado HOAs and design review boards have plant palette and hedge-height expectations. We ask for those rules at the start and plan inside them, because redoing a planting a board rejects costs everyone time.
When is replacing the wrong fix?
Sometimes a shrub is struggling because of water, not the plant. A failing sprinkler zone or salt-damaged heads will kill a new hedge as fast as the old one. We check irrigation before we pull anything.
What do customers ask us?
How long does it take?
It depends on the number of plants and the access. A typical 40-foot hedge replacement takes us one to two days on site. We give a timeline after the walkthrough.
Are you licensed?
We hold CSLB License #1152146 and are bonded and insured.
Can you handle design too?
Yes. Shrub and tree choices usually come out of a larger plan. See our landscape design service, and for ongoing care, monthly maintenance.
