What should you check before hiring a pruner in Coronado?

Check the license, the insurance, and whether the person pruning knows your block's hedge expectations. Coronado HOAs and design review boards often set plant palette and hedge-height rules. Ask who will actually be on site, and ask them to walk the property with you first.

We have pruned on this island for over a decade, and the same few problems keep showing up.

Why do hedge rules matter before the first cut?

Many Coronado HOAs and design review boards have hedge-height expectations. A hedge cut too low or left too tall can mean a notice, or a redo.

We ask for the rules up front. Then we cut to them. Last month on a J Ave lot, the rule capped the front hedge at 6 feet. We brought a 40-foot run of overgrown privet down from about 9 feet, and the owner never heard from the board.

Older lots on B Ave, C Ave, and J Ave add a second layer. Side yards are tight, sometimes only 36 inches wide, trees are mature, and period-correct hedging is what neighbors expect to see.

What should you ask a pruner?

  • Is the contractor licensed? Ours is CSLB License #1152146, bonded and insured.
  • Who is on the property, and who answers when something goes wrong?
  • How do they handle hedge-height rules and design review expectations?
  • Do they return to prune on a schedule, or only show up once?

How does salt air change pruning?

Salt burns new growth on the bayside, and a hard cut in the wrong season invites more of it. We time heavy cuts with that in mind and shape plants like pittosporum to hold up through a January storm.

Fresh cuts also dry faster in the afternoon sun off the bay. That is true on the Ocean Blvd and 1st St beds, which take full sun for hours, with summer afternoons often past 75 degrees.

What does the work cost?

We do not quote hedge work sight unseen. Length, height, access, and how overgrown the hedge is decide the number, and a tight side yard takes longer than an open front bed. As a rough guide, most Coronado hedge jobs we do land between $350 and $900. Sam walks the property and writes the scope down.

A fair quote tells you what is cut, what is hauled, and whether a return visit is included.

When is it more than a trim?

Sometimes a hedge is past saving, or a tree is crowding a wall. Then the conversation moves to shrubs and trees or a rehab job. For routine cuts, see our pruning page.
