What does a landscape design involve on a Hillcrest lot?
A Hillcrest landscape design starts with a site walk, not a drawing. We check drainage toward the canyon, how materials reach the yard through the alley, and how much heat the stucco holds. Then we draw the plan, plant it, and come back to prune.
Samuel Fortes walks every property himself. We don't send a junior out to measure. On a recent job near Robinson Avenue, I spent two hours with a tape and a level on a 40 by 90 foot lot before I drew a single line.
Why does drainage come first on canyon-edge lots?
The blocks that drop toward the canyons behind Bankers Hill and back toward Mission Hills move water fast in a February storm. A pretty bed on the wrong grade washes out.
On that Robinson Avenue lot the yard fell about 14 inches over 20 feet toward the back fence. We read the slope before choosing a single plant. If a wall or a regrade is needed, it goes in the plan and the price conversation up front. A small retaining wall and French drain on a lot like that added roughly $4,500 to $7,000 to the job.
How does alley access change the job?
Many Hillcrest lots are reached through an alley, not a driveway. The alley on that job was about 11 feet wide, so our truck could not get close and we carried soil, pavers, and plants roughly 80 feet by hand and wheelbarrow. That affects how long the install takes, usually adding a day or two.
We would rather tell you that at the walkthrough than surprise you on day two.
What small courtyards need
Courtyards and entry beds carry most of the planting here. West-facing stucco walls bounce heat into the evening. I have measured wall surfaces over 105F on an August afternoon, and a plant that does fine in a shaded side yard can scorch there.
We read the exposure first. Then we pick the palette, often drought-tolerant, and finish with 3 inches of mulch so the yard stays green without leaning on the water meter.
How do you choose a landscaper in Hillcrest?
- Check the CSLB license number before the walkthrough. Ours is #1152146, and we are bonded and insured.
- Ask who walks the property and who draws the plan.
- Ask who returns to prune after the planting settles.
- Ask for the scope in writing, including drainage and access.
Cost depends on grade, access, wall work, and the size of the planting. Most Hillcrest design and install projects we quote land between about $18,000 and $45,000. We give a real range after the site walk, because a number before it would be a guess.
Where do we work around Hillcrest?
We cover Hillcrest, Mission Hills, Kensington, and Downtown San Diego, plus Coronado and Point Loma where most of our portfolio sits. See our Hillcrest landscaping page and our landscape design service for how a project runs.
If we worked on your Hillcrest yard, tell Google which service we did and which street you are on. Neighbors read those reviews closely.
